Natalia Surzenko earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of South Carolina – Aiken in 2004, and PhD in Neurobiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010. She then conducted postdoctoral studies at Harvard Medical School Department of Genetics, followed by holding Research Scientist and Research Assistant Professor positions are the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2013 to 2019. As a professional researcher, Dr. Surzenko has extensive experience with addressing complex biological problems and translating research studies to the public. Her career as a rider began in 1988, when she joined a professional sports organization Dynamo in her home city of Tallinn, Estonia. As a dressage rider, Natalia has been competing at Prix St. George through Grand Prix, and is a bronze, silver and gold medalist at the national level. Dr. Surzenko’s current main professional focus lies with advancing the mission of the Equine Soundness Foundation.
